7. What is Yoga? What style of Yoga is taught?
The word "yoga" originates from the sanskrit root yuj which means Union. On the spiritual plane, it means union of the Individual Self with the Universal Self. Yoga is the union of the body, mind, emotions and intellect. Approximately 2000 years ago, Sage Patanjali penned down this subject in his treatise known as Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Hatha Yoga is the study of the asanas or postures, breath, and meditation based on Patanjali's Eight Limbs of Yoga.
Sage Patanjali's exposition consists of 196 yoga sutras which cover all aspects of life. The eight aspects (astanga) of yoga are :
Yama and Niyama : depicts of moral and social conduct
Asanas : adjust the body in various postures
Pranayama : regulation of breath and energy
Pratyahara : internalization of the senses of perception
Dharana : concentration
Dhyana : meditation
Samadhi : the ultimate state of self realization.

This is the great gift of yoga – it serves and nourishes us at every level of our being and spontaneously contributes to greater well being in all domains of life. Yoga will help you discover gifts within yourself that have remained unopened since your childhood – gifts of peace, harmony, laughter, and love." The Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga by Drs. Deepak Chopra & David Simon
